Prevent Basement Flooding

With Spring hopefully coming soon, it’s a great time to address concerns of a potential flooded basement or weeping walls. Although there is no guarantee your basement will never flood, here are some proactive steps you can take to prevent things from getting out of hand.

GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

Keep gutters clean and free of debris and extend your downspouts away from your foundation - a 3 foot extension is recommended.

FOUNDATION CRACKS

Use an epoxy to fill any foundation cracks you find upon inspecting basement walls and floors. For more serious problems, be sure to call an professional.

WINDOW WELL COVERS

Install window well covers that will fasten securely to your home’s foundation. This helps prevent rain, debris and pests out.

SUMP PUMPS

Make sure your sump pump’s below grade well is free of debris. If you have a portable pump, position it in the lowest part of the basement and be sure it's connected to a power source. Be sure to have a backup battery on hand too.

SEWERS

If you are buying a home, always have the sewer inspected. A professional will tell you it’s condition and if it needs to be cleaned. If your area offers sewer insurance, get it - a minimal monthly payment is better than paying thousands in repairs.
